Cross-community project sees trees planted in Lissywollen centre

A cross-community initiative at Athlone Accommodation Centre in Lissywollen saw the planting of apple trees by a group of volunteers on March 6 last.

The young trees were provided by the Athlone Apples Group, who promote the planting of apple trees and all the knock-on benefits for pollinators, air-quality and the delicious fruit provided.

David Nesengani, who is a resident and co-ordinator of the community garden in the direct provision centre, was present and said "it is great after the last two years of COVID to see people coming together in this place".

Breda McDermott, manager of the centre, was very happy with the new additions and pleased that the links forged will lead to greater cooperation between Athlone Apples, Lissywollen Community Garden, the local GIY (Grow It Yourself) organisation and Gateway Youth Project in future horticultural projects at the centre and around the town.
