No triAthlone in 2022 as organisers cancel event

There will be no triAthlone event this year after organisers made the difficult decision to cancel the triathlon race in the town which had been planned for July.

It was hoped that the event would return this year after the Covid-19 pandemic put things on ice for the past two years, but things have not worked out as planned.

Confirming the cancellation of the 2022 event, Race Director Conor Kelly said: “Firstly I would like to say thank you for sticking with us during these very challenging times. Unfortunately, with broken hearts and many months of hard work, we have made the decision not to run our event for 2022.

“The decision was not made lightly and it was down to a number of factors including loss of funding, sponsorships and construction works on the swim route and transition area.”

In relation to refunds, athletes who had registered have been told the following information: “You don’t need to do anything, we will be issuing refunds for your race entry in the coming weeks. We wish all our athletes a safe and happy race season”.

The triathlon race – which involves swimming, cycling and running - has become a regular feature on the Athlone sporting calendar down the years.

Indeed, Athlone famously hosted the ETU European Triathlon Championships as part of triAthlone in 2010.
