One of Athlone's eldest citizens mourned
One of Athlone's eldest citizens, 105-year-old Catherine (Kitty) Nicholson, sadly died this week and will be laid to rest after a funeral Mass at St Mary's Church tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
Part of a well-known local family, she passed away peacefully on Monday morning in the care of the staff at Sonas Nursing Home.
Predeceased by her beloved husbands Charles and Andrew, and her granddaughter Fiona, she is sadly missed by her loving children Padraig, Sheila (Herraghty), Frank and John (Cha).
Her passing is also mourned by her son-in-law Sam, daughters-in-law Kathleen and Marita, cherished grandchildren, Niamh, Donie, Ruairi, Oona, Gillian, Mark, Sharlene, Cathy and Kevin, her great-grandchildren, her great-great-granddaughter, in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
Originally from Fenagh, in Leitrim, Kitty settled in Athlone's Castlemaine Street.
In December 2011, aged 95, she published her memoir, The Story of My Life.
Following her passing this week , tributes were paid to "a lovely lady" who was known for being, "cheerful, stylish, good-natured and funny."
Her funeral Mass takes place in St Mary's Church at 10.30am on Wednesday, followed by burial in Coosan cemetery.
