Blossom Day event promises fun for all ages next weekend

Athlone Apples first Blossom Day, and follow up to their very enjoyable Apple Day last autumn, is taking place next Sunday, May 8th from 2pm to 4pm in the Franciscan Friary Orchard in Athlone.

This will be a community event open to all and live music will be provided by the Heffernan brothers, Stephen and Patrick.

The Blossom Day is a celebration of the beautiful blossom in the Friary Orchard at this time of year along with all the work carried out planting, pruning and grafting apple trees in, and for, public spaces in Athlone.

The Athlone Apples group would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the initiative so far. There will be a picnic in the orchard and everyone is asked to bring some food or cake to share, there will also be a plant and seed swap, a gardening and cookery book swap.

Local craftspeople will be in attendance along with Irish Seed Savers Association and local children's storyteller Niamh Henderson. It should be a great day and the good cheer will surely help bring about a bountiful harvest in the autumn!

This is a free event but donations to Athlone Apples to fund additional planting, pruning and grafting are most welcome.
