Lack of post-primary places in Athlone area for students with autism highlighted in Seanad

Senator Micheál Carrigy has this morning in the Seanad raised a Commencement Matter to the Minister of Education to discuss a statement on the provision of additional post-primary special class places in Athlone and surrounding areas.

This year there are eight families in Athlone who do not have a school place within the Athlone area.

These families need certainty that their children can be educated in the Athlone area, Senator Carrigy said.

"This is has been going on for years, we know the numbers of children in our primary system and we need to make sure that every family and child is entitled to an education. These families deserve better. I also brought this up with the Taoiseach today and I would like to thank him for his comments that he believes that there should be an obligation there that all post primary schools across the board should take in children with special needs."
