Cllr McCormack elected as new Mayor of Athlone-Moate Municipal District

Ballymore based Cllr Vinny McCormack has been elected as the new Mayor of Athlone-Moate Municipal District.

The Fianna Fáil representative was elected at the council's AGM today at the Athlone Civic Centre.

Cllr McCormack was nominated for the role by his predecessor Cllr Liam McDaniel who said: “Vinny has been an exceptional councillor in my opinion for someone only three years in the job. His work for his constituents has been second to none.”

Fellow Fianna Fáil Cllr Aengus O'Rourke seconded this proposal stating that Cllr McCormack is a top performer in the chamber.

In the absence of any other nominations, outgoing Deputy Mayor Cllr O'Rourke, who chaired the meeting, declared Cllr McCormack to be the new Mayor of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District.

Following his election, Cllr McCormack said: “It is a tremendous honour for me to take on the mayoral chain for the Athlone-Moate District. This is an extremely proud day for my family and I am delighted to be joined today by my wife Deirdre and our two young children Cliodhna and Oisin.”

He also acknowledged the outgoing Mayor Cllr Liam McDaniel. “I am taking over the role from Cllr Liam McDaniel, who, unfortunately due to ill health, did not get the opportunity to carry out his full duties during the course of the year. I am sure all members will agree that it is hugely uplifting to see Liam here in person today for the first time since September 2021.”

Cllr Frankie Keena was elected as the Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.
