Public warned about bogus callers impersonating Gardaí

Westmeath Gardaí have issued a warning to the public, after receiving a number of reports about people impersonating police officers in an attempt to gain entry to houses.

Local Gardaí issued this statement on social media a short time ago:

Gardaí have received reports in recent days of people, calling to houses in Westmeath, impersonating Gardaí in an attempt to gain entry to houses. If a person calls to your home, in plain clothes, identifying themselves as a Garda, we ask you to do the following. Before allowing them access, ask them for their full name and rank and take note of this. Ask to see their Garda id. All Gardaí have an official id badge which contains their name and photo, check that these match. You can also contact your local Garda Station who can confirm the identity of the caller.

We would ask you to be extra vigilant with all callers to your home and do not allow anyone you do not know access to your home. You can contact Mullingar Garda Station 044-9384000 or Athlone Garda Station 090-6492600 24 hours a day or 999 / 112 in an emergency.
