Part of The Strand area closed to walkers and traffic
A portion of The Strand area of Athlone is closed to pedestrians and motorists today (Monday).
A sign has been erected close to the junction with Friary Lane indicating there is no access to The Strand and Goldenisland.
Pedestrians and motorists are forced to head up Friary Lane and Church Street as a result.
Work has been ongoing in the area for some time on flood relief works.
It's unclear how long the closure will last. The Westmeath Independent has contacted the OPW, who are responsible for the flood works, to find out if further closures in The Strand area are planned.
