Flood relief works at The Strand due to be complete towards end of the year

The OPW has confirmed that flood relief works at The Strand are “programmed to be complete in quarter four”of this year.

It followed queries by the Westmeath Independent in recent times following the closure of part of the The Strand, close to the junction with Friary Lane, and down towards Burgess Park.

It said, on July 8 last, that the section was due to be closed for four weeks which would bringing it up to the end of this month.

The Office of Public Works stressed in the reply that the Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme is currently being progressed by Westmeath County Council as the lead authority for the scheme.

“A section on The Strand to the rear of the Friary is currently closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic due to the flood defence works which have been programmed and agreed with Westmeath County Council.

“The works comprise primarily the construction of the flood wall with the associated drainage lines,” the OPW statement explained.
