Today at the Fleadh: What's On

It's meant to be one of the quieter days of the Fleadh week, but Mullingar is hopping at the moment and there are still plenty of things for people to see and do.

The Official Opening of Seachtain na Ghaelige is at 4.30pm in Áras an Mhuilinn. Across the road in The Chambers Tom Delany is launching his new CD at 5pm.

John B Keane's classic play The Matchmaker is in The Arts Centre at 5.45pm.

The Bridge Céilí Band, which features Daithi Gormley, Frankie Gavin and Catherine McHugh, are playing in Cathedral of Christ the King at 7pm.

The Ceannródaithe (Bardic) Awards Dinner is taking place in the Bloomfield House Hotel at 7.30pm. The Bardic Awards are presented to people who have made a significant contribution to Irish music and culture. Two of the awardees are native to Mullingar: Mick Foster and Noel Battle. (The others are Sarah Ghriallais, Helena Rowsome and Padraig Sinnott). The name Rowsome is hugely significant because of the huge contribution by Leo Rowsome who was piper, teacher and pipe-maker and very involved with the pipers club in Dublin. The pipers club was intrinsic to the founding of Comhaltas.

At 8pm, the Meitheal Orchestra, featuring Gary Shannon, are playing in St Paul's Church, while at the same time in Áras an Mhuilinn there's a Summer Seisiún.

Breaking Trad are playing in The Arts Centre at 8.30pm, while Damien Mullane is playing the same venue at 10.30pm.
