Athlone Grow group is relaunching.

Grow in Athlone - An open door to all

Grow Mental Health has been a stalwart in Athlone for many years but when the public health measures came into existence, like so many services, Grow needed to take a step back from face-to-face engagement. Although the longstanding service had to operate with caveats, they successfully ran support groups in the online domain and continue to do so as it has also become a more viable option for some given the mounting costs of fuel and general day-to-day outgoings.

However, in recent weeks, the service once again opened its support groups in Athlone. In doing so, it has been very much a case of ‘starting from scratch’ with a new coordinator and a fresh outlook. The group is keen to expand and to grow ‘Grow’ in the area.

For those who are unfamiliar with Grow and the work that is carried out by this key mental health service, here is a short overview of what it entails.

Grow is about the concept of recovery, in essence, it can be aftercare for some and a support group for others. Many people feel isolated, unheard, or may at times be a little rudderless, and often this is due to having to perceivably traverse the journey to improvement mental health or wellbeing alone. It is a daunting task especially if this is new ground for some people.

Grow offers support around this through weekly meetings. It is led by the members and run by the members; there may, at times, initially, be a Grow staff member present to assist in getting the group off the ground or to assist with the running of the meeting but ultimately, it is for the members, by the members.

Meetings generally run for 90 minutes to 2 hours during which people are invited to share any trials or tribulations they have faced over the recent week or share any successes and good news they may have, after all, recovery is a positive thing, far be it from doom and gloom. In addition to this, they can be supported by the other members of the group. It creates a bit of a support network and above many things, friendships.

The Athlone area groups can be accessed by reaching out to John, the area coordinator on 086 4411358 or via email johnmadden@grow.ie. Potential members are also welcome to stop into the National Learning Network on Wednesday evenings for the meeting which begins at 7pm. It is very much a space for all and given the diverse melting pot of Athlone, people from all walks of life will be welcomed in. So whether you are a student from the Athlone’s Technical University, a retiree, or just somebody in need of support, Grow can be there for you.

The journey to recovery starts with a single step so maybe Grow can be instrumental in helping you with that first step, or perhaps you are already on your journey but need a little support or direction, Grow can offer that too. The meetings are free and open to all over the age of 18 years. So why not come along and see if Grow is the right fit for you, or if a face to face meeting seems a little scary for you, why not join one of the online groups. If interested, call, text or email John at the above contact details. He’s be delighted to hear from you.
