Civic reception sought for Athlone Sub Aqua Club

A proposal to host a civic reception for Athlone Sub Aqua Club came before the July meeting of the local Municipal District and received the unanimous support of members.

Cllr John Dolan, who submitted a motion requesting the civic honour, said he could not think of any organisation in county Westmeath which is “more deserving” of being honoured than Athlone Sub Aqua Club who have given “sterling service” to the area, and all in a voluntary capacity.

He said it was “particularly fitting” that the achievements and voluntary effort of the club should be recognised and honoured this year as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of its foundation.

The motion was strongly supported by the Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, and local Fianna Fail Cllr, Aengus O’Rourke, who said he was “more than happy” to second Cllr Dolan’s request for a civic reception. Municipal District Mayor, Cllr Vinny McCormack, also spoke in favour of the proposal and it received the full support of the meeting.

The members of Athlone Moate Municipal District agreed to have the matter referred to the Corporate Policy Group of the council for approval.
