Athlone the scene of another major cannabis seizure worth over €230k

Revenue officers working in Athlone have intercepted a number of packages of illegal drugs in recent months, and over two days this week they made another significant detection of herbal cannabis with a value of over €230,000.

In a statement issued today, Revenue said that on Monday and Tuesday of this week its officers were carrying out routine parcel-examining operations at a premises in Athlone when they seized 11.6kg of herbal cannabis.

The drugs, which carried a total estimated value of €232,000, were concealed in three parcels.

They had originated in Spain and "were destined for addresses in Westmeath and Dublin," Revenue stated.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
