Young boy dies in Roscommon road tragedy

A young child has died in a road traffic collision in county Roscommon this morning (Friday).

The tragedy occurred near Ballinagere, in the north of the county, shortly after 9am.

A Garda statement said "a jeep collided with a male infant," who received treatment at the scene but was later pronounced dead.

"His body was then taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway where a post-mortem will take place," the statement said this afternoon.

Gardaí and emergency services were in attendance at the scene this morning. No other injuries were reported.

A technical examination of the scene by Forensic Collision Investigators has since been completed and a family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family at this time.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward, and any road users with video footage (including dash cam footage) are asked to make this available to the Gardai.
