Athlone Photography Club relaunches with new Programme Introduction Night

Athlone Photography Club is launching its 2022/2023 programme on Wednesday, September 7, in the Abbey Road Artists Studio (close to the Radisson Blu Hotel), Abbey Road, Athlone.

The club is extending an an open invitation to interested photographers from all levels to discover more about the club at this open night .

After two years of turbulent times during the pandemic, and bi-weekly Zoom meetings, the club is delighted to reopen the physical doors for the 2022/2023 season.

They have an exciting new programme of events planned for the year including talks and workshops with some of the world’s leading photographers in landscape, portrait, wildlife, composite, sport, street and press photography, details of which will be revealed on the night.

With two landscape trips and a portrait shoot already organised for this quarter, budding photographers and experienced photographers will gleam practical learning and hands-on support and even share their own tips with the club.

As well-known American photographer, Jay Maisel, has been quoted saying, “If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.”

The club supports photographers with all levels of experience.

Photo challenges are run throughout the year in Novice, Intermediate and Advanced levels, with winners announced at the end of the year for the best in each category.

Athlone Photography Club was founded in 2013 by a few photography enthusiasts. The club started with around 30 members at the time and has since grown to a membership of over 50.

The club's primary focus is to provide a learning environment for all members regardless of their photographic skills, carried out in a friendly and respectful environment.

The club is affiliated with the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) and competes at National levels against other photography clubs and was the winner of the National Shield in 2015, a competition dedicated to novices and intermediate level.

It also finished in the top 10 for the first time (8th overall out of 26 clubs) at the 2019 National Club Finals, which is for more advanced and skilled photographers. Last year saw the club exhibiting members' work as part of the RTÉ Drama Festival fringe to great reception.

The committee adds that the club welcomes everyone with an interest in photography and of any skill level. The heart of the club is the supportive and close knit community of artists who love to build each other up and learn together.
