Road closure in Clonown for six weeks from today

The Clonown Road (L8009 & L8010), Athlone, will be closed for six weeks beginning today (Monday.)

The closure will facilitate the construction of flood defences and the proposed diversion will be signposted.

Westmeath County Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the road closure.

The closure prevents Clonown residents from travelling between Athlone and their homes via the Clonown Road. Instead, they will need to travel via the old Galway Road or through a narrow track in Duogue.

Using the old Galway Road can add up to ten miles to some residents' journeys.
