Delays expected as major roadworks project begins on Monday

A major roadworks project is getting underway on Monday next on one of the main arteries coming into Athlone.

Roscommon County Council is warning drivers to expect delays as work begins on the N61 stretch from Barrybeg to Ganly's Roundabout along the Roscommon Road on October 3, and could last for a period of ten to twelve weeks approximately.

A stop/go traffic management system will be in place for the duration of the project, with some of the roadworks possibly happening in the evening or at night time.

The project will facilitate the construction of the Athlone North Phase 2 Pavement Improvement Scheme and the Barrybeg Road Safety Improvement Scheme, the council confirmed, urging locals to check their website for regular updates on the project.

Delays are expected during the project and a speed limit of 60kmh will be implemented from Barrymore to Ganlys roundabout.

The works will be carried out by Hanlys Contractors on behalf of the roads department of Roscommon County Council.
