Council to open books of condolence for Creeslough victims

Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council Cllr Aengus O'Rourke has said the council will open books of condolence on the Creeslough tragedy.

In a statement today, he said:

"As Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, on behalf of all the people of Westmeath, I want to express our deepest sympathies to the families of the ten people who lost their lives in the Creeslough tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who are injured, some of whom are currently in a critical condition.

"This terrible tragedy has not just rocked Donegal but the entire country. We are all stunned by the scale and freak nature of the explosion and the awful consequences.

"Over the weekend I have been in contact with the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr Liam Blaney to pass on our condolences as a county.

"I am arranging for a book of condolences to be open at both Athlone's Civic Centre and County Buildings Mullingar."
