Town bridge 'half lit' for over five months

Cllr Aengus O'Rourke has expressed his anger at the fact that the lights on the town bridge in Athlone have been “half lit” for the past five months and has asked for the situation to be rectified as a matter of urgency.

Speaking at the October meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District last week, Cllr O'Rourke sought an update on the lights and said it presents “a very poor image” of Athlone to have such a key piece of infrastructure “half lit for over five months.”

Director of Services Barry Kehoe said the council islooking at “both short and long-term solutions” to rectify the lighting issues on the town bridge, and added that the long-term solution would entail replacing a lot of the electrical infrastructure.

He said council staff have been “on site” at the bridge on a number of occasions and he was hoping that a shortterm solution could be found “within the next week” to get the bridge fully lit up again.
