Cllr John Naughten is highlighting postal delays that are being experienced by people on the Roscommon side of Athlone.

Post in Monksland being delayed by correct use of 'Roscommon' address

A local councillor said he's received a number of complaints from residents in Monksland and other areas on the Roscommon side of Athlone about their post being delayed due to the correct use of their 'County Roscommon' address.

Cllr John Naughten is calling on the CEO of An Post to personally intervene in the matter, after he fielded calls from people who received post that was stamped as 'delayed' because they had used 'Athlone, Co. Roscommon' in their address.

He said that, when the delayed post was eventually delivered, it was marked to indicate that 'Athlone, Co. Westmeath' should have been used as the address instead.

"Residents are being informed that their post has been delayed because they used a county Roscommon address, when clearly those living in Monksland do live in Roscommon and not Westmeath," Cllr Naughten said.

"This is causing a lot of annoyance and frustration for residents throughout the area.

"This is something that occurred previously, and the issue was eventually rectified. However, it is now occurring again and causing unnecessary delays in post."

When contacted by the Westmeath Independent this afternoon (Thursday), the Fine Gael councillor described the situation as completely unacceptable.

"These are people who are living in county Roscommon, and have eircodes in county Roscommon, so the delays need to stop. They should receive their post in a timely manner just like citizens of any other area of the country."

Cllr Naughten is proposing that Roscommon County Council writes to David McRedmond, the Chief Executive of An Post, asking him to intervene directly and put an end to the delays being experienced.
