Upcoming event in memory of Eoinie Farrell to aid Hospice

The late Eoinie Farrell will be remembered in a 5km family fun run/walk in Ardnagrath on Saturday, November 12, and the event will raise funds for South Westmeath Hospice.

The passing of Eoinie at the age of 39 last July left a huge void in many people’s lives.

In seeking support for the upcoming 5k run, Eoinie’s family and friends said in an online post: “Eoinie fought his illness with dignity and a quiet determination, and his final days were spent in South Westmeath Hospice in Athlone. The care Eoinie received from all the staff in the Hospice was a source of relief in the toughest of times.

“The event will take place on the same weekend that Eoinie would have turned 40 and the route is close to his heart. It takes in the home he lived in, the home he grew up in, and his old primary school. It was a regular route for him to take when training for football, runs or triathlons.”

Those you wish to partake in the run/walk - which will take place at 12pm on November 12 - are asked to register through the following link - https://forms.gle/mNrD5knpE2F3wpyK6

The entry fee for an adult is €15 and for a family it’s €25. For those who can’t make it, or who may wish to do a run in another part of the world, they can donate to South Westmeath Hospice on https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/eoiniefarrell5kfamilyfunrunwalk

South Westmeath Hospice relies on voluntary donations to provide their specialist services. All funds raised will go towards the running of the Hospice and the services they provide. All donations, big or small are greatly appreciated for this most worthy cause.

A hugely popular and dedicated sportsman, Eoinie was goalkeeper on the Westmeath minor football team which won the Leinster championship in 2000. Eoinie went on to represent Westmeath at under-21 and senior level and he served as a selector with the Westmeath minor footballers.

He was a key player on the Maryland team that achieved Westmeath intermediate championship success in 2008. In more recent years, Eoinie was a coach and an official with the Maryland/Tang underage club and, even when off the football pitch, he was a real fitness enthusiast.

Eoinie, who was married to Eimear Murphy, battled his illness with characteristic bravery and dignity until the very end. A son of Goretti (née Flanagan) and Tom Farrell (a former Westmeath GAA chairman), Eoin hails from a family steeped in Gaelic games.
