The warning will remain in effect for the rest of today, and up until noon tomorrow.

A yellow-level warning for ice has also been issued from 7pm this evening until noon on Saturday, with overnight temperatures again expected to plummet to minus four.

Last night, a low of -3.9 degrees was recorded at the Met Eireann weather station in Mullingar.

The Mount Dillon weather station in Roscommon was the coldest in the country, recording a temperature of -6.9 degrees last night.

The prolonged cold spell is expected to last well into next week.
