All Ireland Finalists: John Maloney, Wiktor Borkowski, Ben O’Meara Babatunde and Sean Daniel with mentor and teachers, Ms Meighan Duffy

Midlands Maths champions and All Ireland finalists

Eight 6th year students at Athlone Community College competed recently in the Midlands Regional IMTA Team Maths final in Edenderry. The pressure was on to retain the school's title as Midlands winners and All Ireland finalists, after the exceptional performance of last year’s Senior Maths team.

Both teams this year put in an outstanding performance. Not only did the school retain the title and win again but the other team narrowly missed out on a top three placing in the last round, to finish a very respectable fourth.

Topping the leader board against competition from local schools and many others in the Midlands were Sean Daniel, Wiktor Borkowski, Ben O'Meara Babatunde and John Maloney. The team that narrowly missed out were Clodagh O'Brien, Josh Oyiki, Bryan Armstrong and Leo O'Connell.

The All Ireland Final is due to take place on March 5, just days before the IAMTA Senior Applied Maths Quiz, to be hosted in ACC and in the same month also as the IAMTA Junior Problem Solving Competition All Ireland Final, in which ACC students secured their place in just over a week ago. Both Junior and Senior Teams will be very busy over the coming weeks in preparation for these three competitions.
