Offaly school presented with stunning painting by Drumraney artist

The Sacred Heart School in Tullamore recently received a donation of a beautiful painting by a Drumraney artist.

The school said they were delighted to receive a donation of the painting ‘A Cold Wind from the East’ by Peter Ganly. The painting was purchased by Peter's brother Tommy in aid of the Irish Red Cross and kindly donated to the Sacred Heart School as part of their permanent collection on Thursday, March 2.

The local artist said the inspiration behind the painting was the ongoing war in Ukraine. “I did the painting in springtime last year. We were about two or three months into the war at that stage.”

He was influenced by the imagery of bombings in the various cities in Ukraine like Mariupol.

Peter recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art in the Atlantic Technological University Sligo (formerly IT Sligo) and the painting formed part of his final year show of artwork.

He held his first solo art exhibition in Mullingar in January and decided to put some of the works from that collection up for auction to raise money for the Irish Red Cross.

Peter's art centres on expressive paintings and drawings, ranging from rural lakeland landscapes to social documentary, presenting observations on the world around us, sometimes beautiful and sometimes horrific. He works in various materials, pencil, ink, charcoal, or acrylics.
