New series starring actor with strong Athlone links

The brand-new series ‘The Suspect’ starring Aidan Turner, an actor with strong Athlone links, starts tonight (Thursday) at 9pm on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Player.

In this five part-series, Turner, whose grandparents and father came from Athlone and whose grandmother Bridgie continues to live in the area, plays Doctor Joe O’Loughlin who appears to have a perfect life with a devoted wife, loving daughter, successful practice as a criminal psychologist, media profile and publishing deal.

Turner has starred in Poldark, Leonardo, the tv series about Leonardo Da Vinci, and as Kili in The Hobbit.

In episode one, we meet Doctor Joe O’Loughlin, psychologist, and DI Vince Ruiz, who is jaded after years of solving the kind of crimes that don’t make the headlines. When a young woman is found dead, the unusual manner of her death prompts Ruiz’s new partner, DS Riya Devi, to suggest asking Joe for a professional opinion. They need to know what kind of person could commit a crime such as this. Joe, who is shocked by the sight of the young woman’s body, is only too willing to offer help with his profiling and expertise.

But as the investigation into the woman’s death gathers pace, we start to ask, do we know the real Joe, or does he have a secret life?
