Gardaí looking into reports of street disturbance

Gardaí in Athlone are looking into reports of a street disturbance in the early hours of Thursday morning.

At 2.45am, officers were contacted about a disturbance involving several people along John Broderick Street going towards the Golden Island area.

However, on arrival at the scene the crowd had dispersed. Nobody has since presented to Gardaí with injuries or made a complaint in relation to the incident, according to Supt Michelle Baker on Friday morning.

She confirmed they are looking into the reports to asertain what happened.

Meanwhile, two men are currently being questioned in Athlone Garda Station in relation to a trespass incident overnight at the ESB in Garrycastle.

The two, aged in their 20s and 40s, were arrested in the area during the early hours of Friday, and will also be questioned about incidents involving the theft of copper wire.
