Public meeting next week on planned 18m mast in Glasson
A public meeting is taking place in Glasson next week after being organised by a group of local residents who are opposed to the planned installation of an 18 metre telecommunications mast on the outskirts of the village.
The meeting has been arranged for the Glasson Heritage Centre on Tuesday next, April 11, at 8.30pm.
One of the local residents involved in organising it, Helen Claffey, said the meeting would be chaired by health and safety consultant Shane Lynam, and that all of the local councillors and TDs had been invited to attend.
The planned telecommunications mast is being developed by Towercom, a communications infrastructure company based in Dublin, after planning permission for it was awarded to Eircom Ltd, trading as Eir, in 2021.
The mast - an 18 metre monopole - is due to be installed at the existing Eir exchange on the Ballymahon Road, between Glasson village and Tubberclair GAA Club.
A number of local residents are strongly opposed to the development. Speaking recently, Edel Finneran queried whether the nine-metre distance between her home and the proposed structure would make it the nearest mast to a house in rural Ireland.
Towercom said it intends to proceed with the Glasson development this year, and that the project "will deliver services identically to sites countrywide, many of which are situated next to houses or on rooftops and very close to human habitation.
"The site has full planning permission and will comply with all relevant health and other regulations," it said.
