More than 200 vehicles detected speeding on 'Slow Down Day'

A national 'Slow Down Day', which was designed to promote road safety over a 24-hour period on Friday, resulted in more than 200 vehicles being detected travelling over the speed limit, according to Gardai.

A number of speeding offences were detected in the Midlands, including a motorist who drove at 84km per hour in a 50km zone on the N61 at Knockcroghery, Roscommon.

In Offaly, a driver on the R356 at Tonlemone, Banagher, was found driving at 105km per hour in an 80km area.

On the M6 motorway at Kilcurley, Moate, on the Offaly/Westmeath border, a vehicle was clocked at 141km per hour, which was 21km above the speed limit.

There were other speeding detections on the M6 in Westmeath also, with drivers at Killavally, Tyrrellspass, recorded as driving at 153km per hour and 149km per hour in the 120km zone.

The 'Slow Down Day' took place from 7am on Friday last, April 21, to 7am on Saturday, April 22.

Over the 24 hours, GoSafe operators across the country checked the speeds of 140,720 vehicles, and detected 211 that were travelling in excess of the speed limit.

An Garda Síochána said it was continuing to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on roads.
