An exhibition designed to walk viewers through the reality of domestic abuse was launched in St Mary's Church of Ireland, Athlone, on the evening of Friday, April 28.

Souls of our Shoes – A Journey Into and Out of Domestic Abuse was on display throughout the May bank holiday weekend, from April 28 to May 1.

The exhibition was an initiative of the Christian charity Mothers' Union and its main purpose was to raise awareness of domestic violence. It involved shoes that were put on display accompanied by comments from those who have walked away from abuse.

At the opening event, Lesley Bayley gave a very powerful 30-minute presentation on the realities of domestic violence and abuse.

Bishop Pat Storey then officially opened the exhibition. The launch was attended by the Gardai, political representatives, and members of the Esker House Women's Refuge and MOVE organisations, to name a few.

Individuals and groups were welcomed to drop in to view the exhibition and stand in solidarity with all who experience domestic abuse.
