Athlone resident Tim McCarthy inducted into Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame
Athlone resident Tim McCarthy has been inducted into the Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to the sport as a player, coach and commentator on RTÉ.
Work brought the Cork native to the Midlands more than two decades ago, and he lives in Barrymore, Kiltoom.
The 63-year-old's extensive achievements in basketball have included captaining and coaching the Irish senior team, and winning leagues and championships with Blue Demons.
In a post on social media, he said Saturday's ceremony at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dublin was "a very special night," and that he was "honoured" to receive the Hall of Fame accolade.
Speaking at the ceremony, Basketball Ireland chair, Paul McDevitt said: "Congratulations to all our award winners and I’d like to welcome our new inductees to the Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame - Mary Baneham, Karen Hennessy, Timmy McCarthy and Lennie McMillian - it is rich reward for their significant service to basketball."
