Local father and son recognised at recent Hall of Fame awards

Athlone man Michael Flanagan and his son Oliver were both surprised with awards in recognition of all their efforts over the years in organising the National Hall of Fame Awards.

The idea for the National Hall of Fame Awards originated in 2003 as Michael felt that individuals from the bovine, equine and ovine industries should be recognised and acknowledged for their dedication, commitment and the outstanding service they have given for the betterment of their particular breed.

Michael is the CEO for the awards and acted as MC for the night, ably assisted by Secretary, Oliver.

Michael said that the National Hall of Fame has grown year on year and the problem now is trying to accommodate the growing demand for tables.

The 19th National Hall of Fame Awards presentation and banquet was held in the Sheraton Hotel Athlone on Sunday, April 30 last.

A total of 22 recipients from the bovine, equine and ovine industries were inducted into the 2023 National Hall of Fame, before an audience of 400 guests who had travelled from all over Ireland.

Michael expressed his thanks to the main sponsor FBD Insurance, represented on the night by Sales Manager for the Midlands and West, Pat Gilligan, for their support and becoming lead sponsor of the event.

Representing the Kepak Group, who sponsored the ovine Section were Jonathan Forbes and Sean Coffey. Michael also acknowledged and thanked MD of the Certified Irish Angus Producer Group, Charles Smith, who have supported the occasion since its inception in 2003. Aurivo celebrated their second year on board, as an associate sponsor.

ABP Food Group was also an associate sponsor for the event.

Chairman Kepak Group, John Horgan, received a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in recognition of his 20 years as CEO of the group, and building its profile to what it is today.

Co-founder of the Herdwatch & Flockwatch Apps, Fabian Peyaud, based in Roscrea, Co Tipperary received the National Hall of Fame 'Farmers Oscar Award' in recognition of his award winning technological innovation. The guest of honour at the event was Journalist and Beef Editor at Irish Farmers Journal Adam Woods. He congratulated the various recipients and presented them with their awards.

Michael thanked the local press and radio along with the management and staff of the Sheraton Hotel for their attention to detail. An enjoyable night was had by all attendees with dancing to the TR Dallas Band.
