Three Westmeath hurlers on 'team of the week' after remarkable win in Wexford

Three of the Westmeath players who contributed to the county's astonishing win against Wexford yesterday (Sunday) have been named in the Gaa.ie hurling 'team of the week'.

Goalkeeper Noel Conaty, half-forward Niall O'Brien, and full forward Niall Mitchell were singled out for their performances in a win that's been described as one of the biggest shocks in recent GAA history.

Westmeath were 17 points down after 32 minutes, but a Lazarus-like revival resulted in the Lake County men defeating the home side on a scoreline of 4-18 to 2-22.

Former Moate Community School student Niall O'Brien, who scored two second half goals and finished with 2-3, has also been nominated for the Gaa.ie 'Player of the Week' award.

Members of the public can vote for the Castletown Geoghegan clubman on the GAA 'Instagram Stories' account, with voting for 'Player of the Week' closing at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday).

Bookmaker Ladbrokes called Westmeath's win "probably the biggest upset of the decade" in the GAA, saying Darragh Egan's side had been a 1,000/1 shot at half-time in game.
