A young rower with strong family connections to Athlone is competing for Ireland in the European Championships in Slovenia this week.

Brian Colsh has a world senior ranking of 15th from last year’s World Rowing Championships.

The Sligo man, who trained in recent years with Athlone Boat Club, is the grandson of Tom and Alice Colsh, Tormey Villas, Athlone.

His father Tommy Jnr, who is a Garda Superintendent in Castlerea, was a stalwart member of the Athlone club from when he was in his teens and was also a Marist College oarsman.

Last September, Brian gained a world senior ranking of 15th following a successful week’s rowing at the World Rowing Championship in the Czech Republic. The 20-year-old achieved the fantastic rating after coming third in the Men's Single Sculls 'C' final.

Competing in the European Championships in Bled, Slovenia, Brian finished third in his men's single sculls heat (7:11.45).

The Championships will continue until this Sunday, May 28.

The RTE News Channel and RTE Player will broadcast live coverage of the 2023 European Rowing Championship 'A' finals from Bled on Saturday and Sunday.
