Roscommon's Sam Maguire hopes ended as Rebels prevail

All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-final: Cork 1-14 Roscommon 0-16

Roscommon have been knocked out of the All-Ireland SFC as Cork claimed a one-point victory in an entertaining preliminary quarter-final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh today (Saturday).

Kevin O'Donovan's fisted point proved the winner in an exciting finale as the Rebels advanced to the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Substitute Conor Corbett scored the only goal of the game on 58 minutes as Cork took advantage of a Roscommon kickout that went awry.

There was a controversial moment shortly before that goal when Cork felt they were denied a legitimate 'point' by Steven Sherlock. Yet it didn't matter in the end as John Cleary's men backed up last Sunday's win over Mayo.

The Rossies led by four points at one stage in the first half (0-7 to 0-3), but Cork finished the half strongly to trail by the minimum at the interval (0-7 to 0-6).

The Murtagh brothers, Ciaráin and Diarmuid, scored 0-11 of Roscommon's tally between them, but Davy Burke's charges were unable to amass a winning total.

A late red card for experienced star Enda Smith capped off a disappointing day for Roscommon.
