Flower Planters thrown over Town Bridge

In the early hours of Saturday, July 22, three of the flower planters that had been placed on Athlone's Town Bridge were lifted and thrown into the Shannon below.

These flower planters had been installed by Athlone Tidy Towns a month earlier by a dedicated core group of volunteers.

Gerry Johnson of Athlone Tidy Towns said that everybody is naturally “quite disgusted over it”, and that while they “always knew there would be a risk of something like this happening, we were willing to take that risk.”

Athlone Tidy Towns believe that a group of 2-3 people were responsible for this act at around 2am. Gardaí have been informed and will check CCTV footage of the area.

Thankfully, the arrangement has been restored to its former glory, thanks to the work of the volunteers working with Athlone Tidy Towns and members of the Athlone Sub Aqua club who dived in the river to retrieve the planters.

Gerry said that Athlone Tidy Towns will “continue working” to keep Athlone looking beautiful.
