The late Dessie Byrne

Events to raise funds in memory of Dessie Byrne

Two South Roscommon clubs are organising a series of events this weekend close to the first anniversary of the passing of Baylough native Dessie Byrne.

Dessie, who had lived in Lecarrow for many years up to his passing, and his sister Muriel Eriksson died on August 4 last, following a tragic accident whilst on holiday in Ballybunion.

Lecarrow Lazers Cycling Club and St John's Lecarrow Vintage Club have organised events on Sunday, August 6 to raise money for the Dessie Byrne Memorial Fund, which will then be distributed to Lanesborough Sub Aqua Club and Ballybunion Sea Rescue.

Lecarrow Lazers are inviting all cyclists and cycling clubs to make St John's Community Centre in Lecarrow their food stop on their Sunday cycle. Between 9am and 12pm there will be tea and cakes and on opportunity to donate to the worthy cause.

St John's Lecarrow Vintage Club has organised a Car, Tractor, and Bike Run at 3pm.

Funds raised will also benefit Lanesborough Sub Aqua Club and Ballybunion Sea Rescue.

Dessie Byrne was a valued member of both the cycling and vintage club. Brendan Donnelly, chairman of Lecarrow Vintage Club and close friend of Dessie's, said there was good coordination between the Vintage Club and the Lecarrow Lazers to ensure that the events planned for August 6 will go smoothly.

Mary Lennon, club secretary of Lecarrow Lazers, said: “We've had really good feedback from everyone, and lots of shares on Facebook. The local cycling groups help each other out. We're hopeful to get a great turnout.”

The whole day is an inclusive event and caters to the whole family. Non-cyclists can get involved as well, by going to St John's Community Centre on Sunday morning and donating. Any donation, any size is accepted in Dessie's memory.

Mary said: “Dessie was more than just a cyclist, he was a great supporter too. He looked after everyone, and always had a word for everybody.”
