Local representatives, committee members and supporters of the three-day Féile na Sionainne celebration in Athlone at today's gathering to commemorate the 70-year anniversary of the town hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

Athlone's hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 1953 was commemorated at an event organised as part of the town's Féile na Sionainne traditional music celebration earlier today (Tuesday).

Cllr Aengus O'Rourke was the master of ceremonies for the gathering, which saw the unveiling of a commemorative stone marking the 70-year-anniversary. The stone is due to be installed in the town was part of the streetscape revamp underway at Mardyke Street and Sean Costello Street.

The current Fleadh committee chairperson Joe Connaire was among a delegation which travelled from the Fleadh in Mullingar to Athlone to be in attendance this morning. You can catch a flavour of the festivities here:
