Civic honour for Viking Mike

An address of recognition will be given to 'Viking Mike' for his outstanding contribution to tourism later this month.

Michael McDonnell, who established Viking Tours in 1999, will be honoured by by Athlone Municipal District on October 26 next at 5.30pm.

One of the best-known tourism operators in the Midlands, the Kerry native runs the Viking Boat tours along the Shannon and to Clonmacnoise which have proven very popular with visitors and locals alike for more than two decades.

Athlone Sub Aqua Club and Athlone Boat Club will also be bestowed with the civic recognition at the same ceremony on October 26 for their contribution to the town.

Athlone Special Olympics Club, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, will also receive an address of recognition on November 9 next at 5.30pm.
