Hewitt takes charge of Sligo Rovers

Tommy Hewitt has been appointed as the new manager of the Sligo Rovers women’s team.

The Athlone native will take charge of the team in the coming weeks.

Sligo Rovers FC has confirmed that Hewitt will take over from Steve Feeney following the latter's decision "to step away from the role for work and family reasons".

During his time as Athlone Town manager, Hewitt guided Athlone to the FAI Women's Cup final last season and to a second-place finish in the Women's Premier Division.

Shelbourne denied Athlone silverware by winning the double last season, but Hewitt's charges did overcome Shels in the President's Cup match at the start of this season.

Ironically, Athlone defeated Sligo Rovers comprehensively in their recent Women's Cup semi-final as they advanced to a second decider in succession, where Shelbourne will again provide the opposition.

A former Athlone Town player whose playing career was cut short by serious injury, Hewitt received the SSE Airtricity Manager of the Year award for the 2022 Women’s Premier Division.

He resigned as Athlone manager last June and has been succeeded by Ciarán Kilduff.
