Blow for Athlone Town as leading scorer departs

Athlone Town have suffered a blow for the 2024 season with highly rated striker Frantz Pierrot leaving the club to join Drogheda United.

Pierrot was Athlone Town's top scorer in the 2023 campaign with 20 goals and he was the third highest scorer in the SSE Airtricty First Division overall.

He was included in the PFA Ireland Men's First Division Team of the Year for the 2023 season.

Pierrot's goalscoring prowess was an important factor in Athlone reaching the First Division play-offs, where they lost out to Waterford over two legs.

In a statement posted online, Drogheda United FC stated: "Drogheda United is delighted to announce the signing of forward Frantz Pierrot from Athlone Town. Pierrot joins Kevin Doherty’s side subject to work permit approval for the 2024 season."

Pierrot, who grew up in Massachusetts in the United States of America, has played at international level for Haiti, where he was born.

Drogheda finished seventh in this year's Premier Division campaign, with the Louth club managing to steer clear of relegation danger. And the Drogs will be hoping that the arrival of Pierrot will help them to produce an improved showing next season.
