Labour Party 'actively looking' for Athlone election candidate

The Labour Party has confirmed that it is “still actively looking” for a candidate to contest the next local elections in the Athlone Electoral Area.

Before Christmas, the party selected candidates for the three other local election districts in Westmeath at a convention in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar.

Outgoing Cllr Johnnie Penrose will seek to be re-elected for the Moate Municipal Area, whilst Cllr Denis Leonard is running again in the Kinnegad area, and Fidelma Bennett was chosen to run in Mullingar.

A spokesperson said it is “still actively looking” for a candidate in Athlone, and definitely hopes to run a candidate there.
