Brideswell man chosen to chair local Fianna Fáil branch

Brideswell native Malachy Hand was recently elected as chairperson of the Athlone (South Roscommon) Fianna Fáil Comhairle Ceantair at its AGM in the Hodson Bay Hotel.

The meeting on Friday, February 9, was attended by Jack Chambers, Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

Minister Chambers, who attends Cabinet, addressed attendees at the meeting, discussing in detail local and national issues.

Laois Offaly TD Barry Cowen was also in attendance, having recently been selected as Fianna Fáil's European election candidate for the Midlands North West constituency.

The meeting also heard from Senator Eugene Murphy and the party's local election candidates in South Roscommon, Cllr John Keogh, and Athleague's James Murray.

Malachy Hand ran as a candidate for the party at the last local elections in 2019, but he decided last year that he wouldn't pursue a nomination to contest the election due to work commitments.

In addition to Mr Hand, the following officers were elected onto the South Roscommon Comhairle Ceantair executive: Vice-Chair: John Daly (Kiltoom), Secretary: David Murray (Athleague), Treasurers: Anne Kelly (Hodson Bay) and Ryan Dolan (Lecarrow), PRO: Lucy Nally (Clonown), Joint Presidents: Pat Spellman (Taughmaconnell), Pat Creavin (Taughmaconnell), Tommy Mulry (Four Roads) and Sean Connaughton (Rahara).
