Athlone Town make bright start as new signings provide boost

By Lily O'Connor

Athlone Town claimed victory over Wexford FC in the opening match of their 2024 First Division campaign - with signings made just before the season providing an additional boost for the season.

Goals from Noah Van Greenen, Jamal Ibrahim, and Armado Oakley saw the Athlone side secure a 3-0 win at home last Friday night.

New signings before the start of the season contributed to Athlone Town's dominance, particularly that of midfielder Jamal Ibrahim. Before joining Athlone Town, Ibrahim impressed for the Dundalk U17s and then moved to Drogheda United in 2020. Two seasons were spent with Shelbourne's U19s until his move to Longford Town in December of 2022.

In addition, Divine Izekor has been signed by Athlone Town this season. Coming from UCD in 2023, Divine previously had a good run with the Bohemians U17s and U19s.

Italy native Brian Torre made his debut for Athlone Town on Friday, coming on as a substitute for Ibrahim in the closing 20 minutes of the game.

Athlone have also made the loan signing of Gideon Tetteh from Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers. Tetteh broke into the Rovers' first team squad in 2022, and he has appeared for the Republic of Ireland at many underage levels.

Athlone Town will next face Cobh Ramblers this Friday, February 23 at 7.45pm in Turner's Cross. St Colman's Park, the home of Cobh Ramblers, is currently undergoing development work.
