Credit Union highlights issue of money muling to schools

Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union is taking a stand against the issue of money muling by engaging with students in local secondary schools. Money muling is a form of financial fraud where individuals are recruited to transfer illegally obtained money through their personal accounts.

In an effort to raise awareness and educate young people about the dangers of money muling, representatives from Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union have been visiting secondary schools providing Student Fraud Prevention Talks. Most recently, they held a talk at Athlone Community College, where students were given insights into money muling and the repercussions of engaging in these activities.

Joined by Detective Garda Francis Hoban from the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau, the session provided an in-depth understanding of the severe consequences associated with money muling. Detective Garda Hoban elaborated on the legal ramifications and the detrimental impact it can have on individuals and their families.

CEO of Athlone & Castlerea Credit Union, Michael Evans, emphasised the importance of early intervention and education. "As a community-focused financial institution, we believe it's our responsibility to not only provide financial services but also to safeguard our community from emerging threats such as money muling. By engaging with students and providing them with relevant information, we aim to empower them to make informed decisions and protect themselves from falling victim to such scams."
