A 1995 episode of Gerry Ryan Tonight in which the late broadcaster interviewed Athlone politician Mary Rourke, was revisited on the RTÉ Archives website recently.

RTÉ Archives shared a five-and-a-half minute clip of the interview, which was set up to look like it was happening in someone's living room.

The discussion reflected on the role of women in politics, and Mary O'Rourke recalled how she had turned down an offer from then-Taoiseach Albert Reynolds to become a Minister for Women's Affairs because she felt the role would be "too limiting".

Ms O'Rourke, who was an opposition TD at the time, also explained why she was opposed to gender quotas and why she had no interest in running for the presidency of Ireland.

"I'd hate the loneliness of (the presidency)," she said.

"You're very constrained, where you go, what you can say, whom you can meet, how you can do things. It's all within very strict parameters, and that wouldn't suit me whatsoever. I just would be very frustrated with it."
