Athlone troops due to return from Syria this week

Over 120 Irish troops from the 68th Infantry Group, drawn mainly from the 6th Infantry Battalion based in Custume Barracks, Athlone, will return from United Nations duty in Syria on Friday.

The troops are finishing their six-month deployment to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Syria. This is the last time that Defence Forces personnel will deploy as part of this mission following ten years of peacekeeping service in the area.

The 68 Infantry Group departed in October 2023 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Clear.
