Local sinkhole caused by burst sewer main - council

A sinkhole developed on a footpath and cycleway in South Roscommon last weekend.

On Sunday last, a local resident took to the Monksland Discussion Page on Facebook to voice their concern about the sinkhole located near Cross River at Summerhill/Coláiste Chiaráin. It was reported to Roscommon County Council and the sinkhole was cordoned off on Sunday at 5pm.

Another local resident thanked the council for their prompt response in dealing with the sinkhole in Summerhill.

Roscommon County Council said that the sinkhole was caused by a burst/ruptured sewer main.

A spokesperson for the council stated: “Irish Water employees are at the scene and are remedying matters. It’s expected the issue will be resolved in the next day or two.”
