Emergency repairs on Athlone's Connaught Street prompt one-way traffic system

A one-way traffic system is due to be in effect on Connaught Street in Athlone for much of tomorrow (Saturday) to facilitate emergency repairs to a derelict building.

A disused property at 45 Connaught Street was previously acquired by Westmeath County Council and its understood that some slates on the building became loose during a recent storm.

A section of footpath in front of the building is currently closed off and the council said a one-way traffic system will be in place on Connaught Street between 7am and 3pm on Saturday.

The local authority notice advising the public of the temporary one-way system said east-bound traffic would be diverted "via the R446 Galway Road, Castle Street, High Street, Bastion Street and O'Connell Street".

The council apologised for any inconvenience caused.
