TUS in Athlone to host community sustainability events later this week

Local community representatives are due to take part in a series of sustainability events being held on the TUS campus in Athlone later this week.

The TUS Community Sustainability Showcase will be held this Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19, starting at 9am each morning.

The events will outline details of the research and community engagement projects taking place at TUS which could help communities find pathways forward in a time of climate transition.

The Community Sustainability Showcase has been arranged to coincide with the Erasmus+ Study Visit of the board of the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation, the largest environmental NGO grant funder in Czechia, who are visiting Universities and NGOs in Ireland to help inform their approach to their activities.

On Thursday morning, the Sustainability Showcase will kick off with a presentation from the Czech Environmental Partnership Foundation. Following this, TUS researchers from all campuses will present best-practice examples of projects that empower communities to be more sustainable and to lower their carbon footprint.

On Thursday afternoon, from 2pm to 4.30pm there will be a roundtable discussion on community sustainability. Entitled, 'Engaging Communities for the Climate Transition', it will involve community group representatives, academics and sustainability professionals.

Westmeath PPN, and others working in community sustainability will give their perspective on the key challenges of empowering communities for the climate transition, with workshop questions for the audience and speakers on how the different sectors represented can best support communities to lead in climate action.

Meanwhile on Friday morning, from 9am – 1pm, there will be a series of presentations from all TUS Campuses on how TUS educators and researchers are working to put sustainability and climate action at the heart of their programmes and educational delivery.

This event takes place in the TUS Athlone main campus and is primarily in-person. It is open to the public, and in particular the local community.
