Jockey with strong Athlone roots wins in Limerick

Promising young jockey Sean Cleary Farrell claimed his fifth career success when winning on Ballycallan King in the second of the two-mile handicap hurdles at Limerick last Thursday.

Cleary Farrell is a son of the late Athlone jockey Sean Cleary. He was born in 2003 just two days before the passing of his father in hospital, following a fall from a horse in a race which took place in Galway.

Based in Carlow, where his mother Maggie resides, Cleary Farrell has strong connections to the Athlone area. His uncle Rory Cleary has enjoyed considerable success as a jockey, and his grandfather Tom Cleary from Carrickobrien, Athlone is a well known horse trainer.

Trained by Barry Fitzgerald, Ballycallan King ran out one of the easiest winners of last Thursday afternoon's action in Limerick. The 11/2 chance scored by all of ten lengths in the colours of the Saddle Her Up syndicate from the Philip Rothwell-trained Rockbrook.
